Everything about CrossFit shoes

CrossFit shoes are designed for training sessions where strength, explosiveness, stability, and speed constantly alternate. Unlike running shoes or regular sneakers, good CrossFit shoes are built to provide a stable base for lifting while still offering enough freedom of movement for box jumps, lunges, burpees, and other functional movements.

At WODgear, the current focus is mainly on the TYR CXT-3 trainers, a versatile training shoe for CrossFit and functional fitness.

What are CrossFit shoes?

CrossFit shoes, also known as trainers or training shoes, are all-round sports shoes designed for varied workouts.

A good CrossFit shoe should combine several characteristics:

  • A stable base for squats, deadlifts, and other strength movements
  • Enough flexibility for lunges, box jumps, and burpees
  • Good grip on the floor
  • Sufficient cushioning for short runs and conditioning work
  • A durable construction that can handle intensive use

That combination is what separates CrossFit shoes from many other sports shoes. Running shoes are usually softer and built higher, while weightlifting shoes are much stiffer and more specialised.

Why use dedicated CrossFit shoes?

During a CrossFit workout, you often switch quickly between different movements. You might start with deadlifts, move into box jumps, and finish with a short run or a set of burpees.

That is why you do not want to change shoes for every exercise.

Good CrossFit trainers give you a firm and stable base during strength work while remaining flexible enough for dynamic movements and conditioning.

The main benefits are:

  • More stability during strength movements
  • More control during explosive movements
  • Enough flexibility for functional movements
  • Better grip on different surfaces
  • More versatility within a single workout

What is the difference between CrossFit shoes and running shoes?

Running shoes are primarily designed to absorb impact while running. They usually have a softer midsole and more cushioning.

That is comfortable for longer runs, but less ideal when you are squatting heavy, deadlifting, or performing explosive movements. Because of the softer sole, your foot can move more and you may lose some stability.

CrossFit shoes are generally built with a firmer and more stable base. At the same time, they still provide enough cushioning and flexibility for short runs and conditioning work.

If you mainly run longer distances, a dedicated running shoe is still the better choice. For mixed CrossFit workouts, a trainer is usually much more suitable.

What is the difference between CrossFit shoes and weightlifting shoes?

A weightlifting shoe is specifically designed for Olympic weightlifting and heavy lifts. These shoes usually have a stiff sole and an elevated heel, giving you a stable position during movements such as cleans, snatches, and squats.

CrossFit shoes are more versatile. They offer more flexibility and are better suited to workouts where you also need to jump, run, or perform other functional movements alongside lifting.

In short:

  • CrossFit workouts with many different movements → CrossFit trainers
  • Heavy Olympic lifts or dedicated weightlifting sessions → weightlifting shoes
  • Longer running sessions → running shoes

Which CrossFit shoes are the best?

The best CrossFit shoes for you depend on your training and personal preference.

At the moment, the main focus within our collection is the TYR CXT-3. This model is designed as a versatile training shoe for CrossFit and functional fitness, combining stability with enough flexibility for dynamic movements.

The CXT-3 is particularly suitable for athletes who want one shoe for most of their training, from strength work and squats to box jumps, burpees, and conditioning workouts.

The final sizes of the TYR CXT-2 are still available while stocks last, but the CXT-3 has now taken over as the main model in our collection.

When should you choose trainers, lifters, or running shoes?

Not sure which type of shoe you need? Use this simple guideline.

Choose CrossFit trainers when:

Your training combines different elements such as strength, gymnastics, short runs, and conditioning. For most CrossFit workouts, this is the best and most versatile option.

Choose weightlifting shoes when:

Your training mainly focuses on heavy squats, cleans, snatches, or other Olympic lifts, and maximum stability is more important than flexibility.

Choose running shoes when:

You run longer distances and cushioning, comfort, and running efficiency are more important than stability during strength training.

Which CrossFit shoe should you choose?

For most athletes, a good trainer is the foundation of their footwear rotation. You can use it for almost every CrossFit workout without having to worry too much about what is programmed.

If you mainly train CrossFit and functional fitness and want one versatile shoe, explore our CrossFit shoes and the different versions of the TYR CXT-3.
